Abdul Qaadir of Baghdad
Shaiekh Abdul Qaadir Jilaani
[Rahmatul Laah Alaieh]
also spelled Jelaani, Al-Gilani was a Soofie, Scholar and the founder of the Qaadiri Soofie order [Chain-[Silsila]]. He was born in the month of Ramadan in 470 AH [1077-78 AD] in the Persian province of Jilaan/ Gilaan [Iran], south of the Caspian Sea. His birth was a great blessing for the Ummah. It was the arrival of the King of the Saint, which had been foretold before his birth, many Saints predicted that soon a person would emerge in Baghdad, whose name would be Abdul-Qaadir and he would be the leader of all Saints.
The Shaiekh Abdul Qaadir occupied a
unique position. He was not only an outstanding Saint, Sage, Scholar, and a Reformer,
but also Defender of Faith. He achieved immortality by dint of his strength and
nobility of character, modesty, humbleness, pursuit of truth, self-discipline,
renunciation, sacrifice, service, faith, hope and belief.
His contribution to Islam and Shariah
was so immense that he became known as the ‘Spiritual Pole’ of his time,
‘Al-Ghaus Al-A'zam’.
The "Supreme Helper" or the
"Mightiest Succor".
His writings were similar, to those of Imaam al-Ghazali
in that they dealt with both the fundamentals of Islam and the mystical
experience of Sufism.

Shaiekh /Sheikh/Shaykh:
A term applied throughout the Islamic
world to respected persons of recognized seniority in learning, experience, and
wisdom. Its basic meaning in Arabic is
“A Teacher, an elderly wise man; a
man over fifty years of age.”
Saiyyid:
The word Saiyyid denotes his lineage from
Prophet Muhammad
[Sallal Laahu Alaieh Wa Sallam]
Abdul Qaadir:
This is HIS personal Name, meaning
“Servant of the All-Powerful.”
Al-Jilaani/ Al Gilaani:
A surname ending in “I” will often
indicate the bearer’s place of birth. Shaiekh ‘Abdul-Qaadir Jilaani [Rahmatul Laah Alaieh] was born in the Iranian district of Gilan/Jeelaan south of
the Caspian Sea, in A.H. 470/1077-8 C.E...thus the title Jilaani/ Gilaani.
Al Hasani Al Husaieni:
“He was the descendant of both Hazrat
Imaam al-Hasan and Hazrat Imaam al-Husaien [Radiyal Laahu Anhuma], the Grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad
[Sallal Laahu Alaieh Wa Sallam].
“The lineage of Shaiekh Hazrat
Saiyyid Abdul Qaadir Jeelaani [Rahmatul Laah Alaieh] is
known as the Chain of Gold, since both his parents were descendants of the
Prophet Muhammad
[Sallal Laahu Alaieh Wa Sallam] His noble father,
‘Abdul Hazrat Abu Saleh Musaa, traced
his descent by way of Hazrat Imaam al-Hasan [Rahmatul Laah Alaieh] while his revered mother, Hazrat Bibi Ummul Khaier Fatimah traced
hers through Hazrat Imaam al-Husaien
[Radiyal Laah Anhu].”
