How Many Suhuf Were Revealed, and to Which Prophets Were They Given?

Quraan

Introduction

Allah Almighty sent divine guidance to His chosen Prophets to guide mankind towards truth, righteousness, and obedience to Him. Throughout history, some revelations were given in the form of Suhuf (صحف), meaning pages or written scriptures. These revelations contained guidance for the people of their respective times.

What Are Suhuf?

The word Suhuf is the plural of Sahifah, which means a page or written sheet. In Islamic teachings, Suhuf refers to scriptures or revealed pages given by Allah Almighty to certain Prophets. They were part of the divine guidance sent to humanity through His Messengers.

The Holy Quran mentions the Suhuf of Prophet Ibraaheem (Abraham) and Prophet Moosa (Moses), peace be upon them.

Allah Almighty says:

“The Scriptures of Ibraaheem and Moosa.”

(Surah Al-A‘la, 87:19)

How Many Suhuf Were Revealed?

The exact number of Suhuf revealed by Allah Almighty is not established with certainty from the Qur’an. Islamic traditions contain reports about the number of scriptures given to different Prophets, but such reports should be verified through reliable sources before being presented as definite facts.

According to commonly circulated Islamic teachings, Suhuf were revealed to the following Prophets:

  • Prophet Adam (عليه السلام): Some Suhuf are reported to have been given to him.
  • Prophet Shit (Seth, عليه السلام): Some Suhuf are reported to have been revealed to him.
  • Prophet Idrees (Enoch, عليه السلام): Some Suhuf are reported to have been given to him.
  • Prophet Ibraaheem (Abraham, عليه السلام): The Suhuf of Ibraaheem are mentioned in the Holy Quran.
  • Prophet Moosa (Moses, عليه السلام): The Suhuf of Moosa are also mentioned in the Holy Quran.

The precise number of Suhuf attributed to each Prophet should not be stated as certain without reliable evidence.

The Suhuf of Ibraaheem and Moosa in the Holy Quran

The Holy Quran refers to the earlier scriptures in Surah An-Najm:

“Or has he not been informed of what is in the Scriptures of Moosa, and of Ibraaheem, who fulfilled his obligations?”

(Surah An-Najm, 53:36–37)

These verses remind us that Allah Almighty sent guidance to earlier Prophets and that the message of accountability, righteousness, and devotion to Allah was central to divine revelation.

Our Belief in Divine Revelation

As Muslims, we believe that Allah Almighty sent revealed scriptures to His chosen Prophets. We respect all the Prophets of Allah and believe in the divine revelations that He truly sent down. The Holy Quran is the final revealed Book, sent to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and Allah Almighty has promised to preserve it.

Learning about the Suhuf helps us appreciate the history of divine guidance and strengthens our belief in the Prophets and Messengers of Allah.

Conclusion

Suhuf were part of the divine guidance sent by Allah Almighty to certain Prophets. The Holy Quran specifically mentions the scriptures of Prophet Ibraaheem and Prophet Moosa (عليهما السلام), while reports also associate Suhuf with other Prophets. The exact total number should be treated cautiously unless supported by reliable evidence.

May Allah Almighty increase our knowledge of Islam, strengthen our faith, and guide us to follow His teachings sincerely. Aameen.
