Allah Sends Blessings on the Prophet (Al-Ahzab 33:56)
The verse:
Meaning: Truly, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.
There are many commands in the Quran, but very few begin the way this one does. Before telling us to do anything, Allah tells us what He is already doing: He and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. Only then are we invited to join. It is as if a great gathering is already underway, and the believers are being asked to step in.
What does salawat mean?
When Allah sends salah on His Messenger, scholars explain that it means praise and honor in the highest assembly. When the angels do it, it is a prayer for him. When we do it, it is a dua that Allah raise his rank and shower him with mercy. Notice that the Prophet ﷺ does not need our dua; it is we who are honored to be allowed to give it.
The verse ends with two commands: send blessings and send salaam, greet him with peace, in a full and complete way. The word tasliman is an emphatic one. This is meant to be sincere and wholehearted.
The gift hidden in salawat
The hadith tradition tells us that whoever sends one blessing upon the Prophet ﷺ receives ten blessings from Allah in return. Many of the righteous have also described salawat as a means of relief from worry, a way to gain nearness to the Prophet ﷺ, and a key to the acceptance of dua. You don't need a special time or place for it. It fits into a commute, a walk, or the quiet minutes before sleep.
Making it a daily habit
Anchor it to something you already do. Say a set number of salawat after each prayer, or while the kettle boils, or while you wait in line.
Start small and stay steady. Ten a day, kept daily, is better than a thousand once a year.
Use the simple form. Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad is enough, or the fuller Salat Ibrahimiyya recited in the tashahhud.
Make it Friday-special. Increase your salawat on Fridays, a day the Prophet ﷺ encouraged it.
Let it soften your heart. When you are stuck in frustration, replace the next complaint with a salawat and see what happens to the mood.
Reflect: If Allah and His angels are already sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, what stops you from joining them right now?
A closing dua: O Allah, send peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad, and make our salawat a means of nearness to him and to You. Ameen.
