Surah Al-Fath: The Clear Victory That Looked Like Defeat (48)
The verse (48:1):
إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا
Meaning: Truly, We have granted you a clear victory.
Surah Al-Fath was revealed as the Prophet ﷺ and his companions were returning from Hudaybiyyah, and the mood among them was heavy. They had left Madinah hoping to perform 'umrah. They were stopped outside Makkah, and the treaty they were asked to sign seemed, on its surface, to favor the other side. They would turn back that year without completing the pilgrimage. Some terms were hard to accept, and even strong-hearted companions were distressed.
In that atmosphere, this surah arrived and began with a declaration: this is a fath, a victory, and a mubin, clear one.
When the outcome hides the blessing
It is hard to imagine a more striking lesson. What the eyes saw was turning back; what Allah named was victory. The treaty brought a period of calm, which allowed people to meet, talk, and hear the message without fear. Over the next two years more people entered Islam than in all the years before. The following chapter of history, including the peaceful opening of Makkah, grew from the soil of this "setback."
Sakina in the heart
The surah tells us that it was Allah who sent down sakina, tranquility, into the hearts of the believers so that their faith would increase (48:4). The calm did not come from a change in circumstances. It came from Allah, in the middle of the circumstances. Sakina is a gift worth asking for.
The pledge under the tree
The surah also speaks of the pledge given to the Prophet ﷺ beneath a tree at Hudaybiyyah, when the companions promised to stand with him. Allah says He was pleased with the believers who pledged (48:18). Imagine hearing that your effort was recorded and approved in the Book that will be recited until the end of time.
Bringing it into daily life
Be slow to call something a loss.
If you are in a situation that looks like a closed door, ask whether Allah is arranging something you cannot yet see.
Ask for sakina.
In moments of anxiety, make dua that Allah send tranquility into your heart before He changes your situation.
Keep your word and your trust together.
The companions acted with obedience and patience while not understanding the plan.
Revisit your "Hudaybiyyahs."
Think of a past disappointment that later turned out to be a blessing, and give thanks.
Reflect:
What is one thing in your life that looks like defeat right now, and how might it look different in a year?
A closing dua:
O Allah, send tranquility into our hearts, grant us trust in Your plan when we cannot see it, and open for us victories that we did not expect. Ameen.
