"Truly, You Are of Magnificent Character" (Al-Qalam 68:4)
The verse:
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
Meaning: And truly, you are of a magnificent character.
This is one of the shortest verses about the Prophet ﷺ, and one of the most weighty. It comes early in Surah Al-Qalam, a surah revealed in Makkah while he was being mocked and accused of madness. His opponents had a name for him; Allah gave a different verdict. The answer to their insults was not an argument. It was a testimony straight from the Lord of the worlds: you are upon a character that is 'azim, immense.
Why this word matters
The Quran uses 'azim sparingly, for things like the Throne and the Quran itself. To describe someone's character with the same word is a remarkable honor. It tells us that his khuluq was not merely pleasant manners. It was a settled disposition of the heart, expressed in everything he did.
When someone asked 'A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the Prophet's ﷺ character, she answered with a sentence that has echoed through the centuries: his character was the Quran. In other words, the Book walked on two feet. Every quality it praises, patience, truthfulness, humility, generosity, and forgiveness, could be seen in him.
What it looked like
He was never harsh in speech and never cursed, even when wronged.
He served his family at home and mended his own clothes.
He was most generous in Ramadan, giving without fear of poverty.
He greeted people first and gave full attention to whoever was speaking to him.
He forgave those who had hurt him most, including at the conquest of Makkah.
Bringing it into daily life
At home.
The people closest to us often get the least of our good character. Start there.
Online.
Before you reply to something that angers you, ask whether it matches the magnificent character you claim to love.
In disagreement.
Be firm on the truth and gentle in how you say it.
In private.
Character is who you are when no one is watching, and that is where it is truly tested.
The Prophet ﷺ said that the most complete believers in faith are those with the best character. Worship and khuluq are not separate tracks; they are meant to grow together.
Reflect:
Which one quality of the Prophet's ﷺ character do you most want to grow in this month, and what is one concrete step toward it?
A closing dua:
O Allah, as You have made my outward form, make my character beautiful too, and grant us a share of the character of Your Beloved ﷺ. Ameen.
