What Is the Belief of Sunni Muslims About the Knowledge of the Holy Prophet ﷺ?
Introduction
The knowledge and exalted status of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are important subjects in Islamic belief. Sunni Muslims (Ahl-e-Sunnat wal-Jama'at) believe that Allah Almighty bestowed upon His beloved Messenger ﷺ immense knowledge, wisdom, and guidance. They also believe that Allah may reveal knowledge of the unseen to His chosen Messengers as He wills.
Understanding this subject requires distinguishing between the knowledge that belongs exclusively to Allah Almighty and the knowledge that He grants to His Prophets.
Allah Almighty Is the Absolute Knower of the Unseen
According to Islamic belief, Allah Almighty possesses perfect and unlimited knowledge. Nothing in the heavens or on earth is hidden from Him, and His knowledge does not depend on anyone granting it to Him.
Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:
“Say, ‘None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”
(Surah An-Naml, 27:65)
This verse establishes that knowledge of the unseen, in its absolute and independent sense, belongs to Allah Almighty alone. No created being possesses knowledge equal to His knowledge or independent of Him.
Knowledge of the Unseen Granted to the Prophets
The Holy Quran also explains that Allah Almighty may disclose some matters of the unseen to His chosen Messengers.
Allah Almighty says:
“He is the Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His unseen to anyone, except to a messenger whom He has approved.”
(Surah Al-Jinn, 72:26–27)
These verses show that Allah Almighty may grant His Messengers knowledge of matters that are hidden from ordinary human perception. Such knowledge is bestowed by Allah according to His wisdom and will.
Sunni Muslims affirm the greatness of the knowledge granted to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while maintaining that Allah Almighty alone possesses absolute and independent knowledge of the unseen.
The Special Knowledge of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final Messenger of Allah and the most honoured of the Prophets. Allah Almighty revealed the Holy Quran to him, taught him divine guidance, and informed him of matters that people could not know through ordinary means.
The Holy Quran contains accounts of earlier nations, descriptions of the Hereafter, and information about events beyond ordinary human knowledge. These revelations demonstrate the extraordinary guidance bestowed upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Muslims should approach reports concerning the precise extent of the Prophet's ﷺ knowledge with care, distinguishing between what is established by the Holy Quran and authentic Hadith and what depends on particular scholarly interpretations or reports that require verification.
The Difference Between Allah's Knowledge and Granted Knowledge
A fundamental distinction in this subject is the difference between Allah's own knowledge and knowledge granted to a created being.
- Allah Almighty: His knowledge is perfect, unlimited, and independent. Nothing is hidden from Him.
- The Prophets: They receive knowledge through Allah's revelation and whatever else Allah chooses to disclose to them.
- Other created beings: Their knowledge is limited, and any knowledge of hidden matters that Allah grants them remains dependent on Him.
Therefore, affirming that Allah granted knowledge of certain unseen matters to His beloved Prophet ﷺ does not mean that the Prophet possesses Allah's divine attribute independently.
The Wisdom Behind Prophetic Knowledge
The knowledge bestowed upon the Prophets serves the purpose of guidance. Through revelation, Allah Almighty teaches humanity about faith, worship, morality, accountability, and the Hereafter.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ conveyed Allah's message faithfully and taught his Ummah how to live according to divine guidance. His Sunnah provides Muslims with an example of mercy, honesty, patience, justice, and devotion to Allah Almighty.
Believers should therefore express their love and respect for the Holy Prophet ﷺ by learning his teachings, following his Sunnah, and sending Durood and Salaam upon him.
Conclusion
Sunni Muslims believe that Allah Almighty bestowed exceptional knowledge and honour upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and that Allah may reveal matters of the unseen to His chosen Messengers. At the same time, Allah alone possesses absolute and independent knowledge of everything.
A balanced understanding of this subject honours the status of the Holy Prophet ﷺ while preserving the essential Islamic belief that all divine knowledge and power belong ultimately to Allah Almighty.
May Allah Almighty increase our knowledge of Islam, strengthen our love for His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and guide us to follow the Holy Quran and Sunnah with sincerity. Aameen.
