The Names of Allah (Al-Hashr 59:22-24)
The closing verse (59:24):
Meaning: He is Allah, the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner. To Him belong the most beautiful names. Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him, and He is the Almighty, the Wise.
The last three verses of Surah Al-Hashr are one of the densest gatherings of Allah's names in the Quran. In a few lines, we meet the One who knows the unseen and the seen, the Most Merciful, the King, the Holy, the Source of Peace, the Granter of Security, the Guardian, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme, the Creator, the Originator, and the Fashioner. It is a short course in knowing your Lord.
Why the names matter
The Quran says that to Allah belong al-asma' al-husna, the most beautiful names, and invites us to call upon Him by them. A hadith in the collections of Bukhari and Muslim speaks of ninety-nine names, and promises Paradise to whoever ahsaha, a word that scholars explain as including learning, understanding, and living by them.
Knowing the names is not an academic exercise. Each one answers a need of the heart.
A few from these verses and what they offer
Al-Quddus, the Pure.
In a world of imperfect people, there is One who is utterly free of any flaw.
As-Salam, the Source of Peace.
Every real peace comes from Him.
Al-Mu'min, the Granter of Security.
He is the One who gives safety to the frightened.
Al-Jabbar, the Compeller.
The name also carries the sense of the One who mends what is broken.
Al-Khaliq, Al-Bari', Al-Musawwir:
He creates, brings into being, and gives each thing its exact form, including you.
Calling upon Him by His names
The Quran tells us to call on Allah by His beautiful names. This means that your dua can be shaped by who He is.
Feeling anxious? Ya Salam, ya Mu'min.
Feeling broken? Ya Jabbar.
Feeling forgotten? Ya Latif, ya Wadud.
Asking for provision? Ya Razzaq, ya Fattah.
Bringing it into daily life
Learn one name a week.
Read its meaning, then notice where it shows up in your life.
Act on the name.
Learning that Allah is Ar-Rahman invites us to be merciful. Learning that He is As-Sabur invites patience.
Begin duas with a name that fits your need.
It focuses the heart and often softens it.
Revisit the verses at the end of the day.
Reciting them is a way of settling your heart in who Allah is.
Reflect:
Which name of Allah does your heart need the most right now, and why?
A closing dua:
O Allah, we ask You by every name by which You have named Yourself, taught to any of Your creation, or kept in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Quran the spring of our hearts. Ameen.
