Bis Mill Laah -In the Name of Allaah Most Gracious Most Merciful

Bismil laahir Rahmaa Nir Raheem
"Bismil laah" is the key to the Holy Quraan and to all permissible actions. Any good deed that is commenced with the Bismil laah is worthy of great reward. If any good action is not commenced with Bismil laah, then that action remains incomplete. To recite it before any bad deed is forbidden. If one eats or drinks without reciting the Bismil laah, the Shaietaan joins in the meal. When slaughtering an animal, one must say the words: "Bismil laah Allaahu Akbar."

It is one complete Ayaat of the Holy Quraan. But it is not the part of any Soorah. With the exception of Soorah Tauba, every other Soorah commences with the Bismil laah. When performing Taraweeh, it is necessary for the Haafiz to recite Bismil laah aloud at least once.

In Soorah Naml, the Bismil alah which appears is part of the Ayaat. The excellence of the Bismil laah being explained here refers to the Bismil laah written before each Soorah in the Quraan except for Soorah Tauba.

The Islaamic Scholars have stated that there are 3 000 known Names of Allaah Almighty. One thousand are known only to Angels, 1 000 to Ambiya [Prophets], 300 names are in the Taurah, 300 in the Injeel, 300 in the Zaboor and 99 in the Holy Quran. In total there are 2 999 in number.
In the Bismil laah, the Names "Allaah," "Rahmaan" and "Raheem" are the basis of all the 3 000 Names. Thus, he who recites the Bismil laah gets the blessings of reciting the 3 000 Names. Bismil laah also has numerous other benefits.
