In this unusual calligraphic composition from southern India, the Arabic
phrase "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim" (“In the name of God, the
Merciful, the Compassionate”) is written four times: right side up,
upside down, and in reverse of each of these.
It is the opening phrase
of all but one of the chapters of the Qur'an. In the little inscription
in black ink above, the page is referred to as a tughra, a type of
calligraphic emblem that originated in Turkey in the sixteenth century
and became popular in India in the nineteenth. Mirror writing in various
cursive and squared scripts was a common practice in Indo Sub Continent, Turkey, and
Iran in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Calligraphers were the
most celebrated artisans in traditional Islamic cultures: to repeat the
Bismillah is to repeat the word of God; to do so in beautiful script is
to glorify the word of God.
Bismil-Laahir- Rahmaa nir-Raheem
Allaah, in whose name I begin, is the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
The phrase Bismil- Laahir-Rahmaa nir-Raheem contains the true essence of the entire Qur'aan.
This expression is so magnificent and so concise that all but one chapter of the Qur'aan begins with these words.
Holy Prophet Muhammed
[Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]said:
"Every act of significance not begun with the name of Allaah is incomplete and without Blessing."
"Every act of significance not begun with the name of Allaah is incomplete and without Blessing."
"He is the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful."
Following the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammed
[Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]
[Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]

It is one complete Ayaat of the Holy Qur'aan but it is not the part of any Chapter Surah/Soorah.
With the exception of Soorah Taubaa, every other Surah commences with the Bismil laah.
Muslims say this phrase when commencing on any significant, attempt and the phrase is considered to be a major pillar of Islaam.
.
The Bismil- Laahir-Rahmaa nir-Raheem is a recognition and honoring of the very source of all existence, the source of all Blessings, the source of All Compassion, the Source of All Mercy...
Who gives endlessly to us and who also responds to us according to our moral integrity, and our love of Allaah Almighty.
