What does the revealed book mean?
The Revealed Books: Allaah's
Guidance for Humanity
A revealed book is a book that Allaah Almighty sent down for the guidance of mankind, so that people may know Allaah and His Messengers and carry out their commands. Belief in these books is one of the six pillars of faith (Ieeman) in Islam.
Why Did Almighty Allaah Send Books?
Allaah did not create humanity and leave it without direction. Every messenger came with a message, and that message was preserved in revelation. The books do three things:
- They teach us who Allaah is. His oneness (Tauheed), His attributes, and His mercy.
- They introduce His Messengers. Who they were, what they taught, and why they must be followed.
- They show us how to live. What is lawful and unlawful, and how to worship, deal justly with others, and prepare for the Hereafter.
Without revelation, the mind can sense that there is a Creator, but it cannot fully know His will. The books fill that gap.
The Books Named in the Quran
The Quran mentions several revealed scriptures:
- The Suhuf (Scrolls) were revealed to Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham) and Prophet Moosa (Moses), peace be upon them.
- The Taurat (Torah) was revealed to Prophet Moosa (Moses).
- The Zabur (Psalms) was revealed to Prophet Dawood (David).
- The Injil (Gospel) was revealed to Prophet Ieesa (Jesus).
- The Quran was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
We Muslims believe all of these came from the same Source and carried the same core message: worship Allaah alone. As the Quran says, we make no distinction between any of His messengers (2:285).
The Quran: The Final and Preserved Revelation
The earlier scriptures were addressed to particular peoples and periods. The Quran is the final revelation, sent to all of humanity until the Day of Judgment. It confirms the truth in the earlier books and stands as a criterion over them (5:48).
Almighty Allaah also took upon Himself the protection of this book:
"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian" (15:9).
For over fourteen centuries the Quran has been memorized by millions of hearts and recited in the same words across the world. That is why it is the one book Muslims hold to be fully preserved.
What Does Belief in the Books Require of Us?
Faith here is more than a statement. It means:
- Believing that these books were truly revealed by Allaah Kareem.
- Following the Quran as the final guidance, since it is the one preserved among them.
- Reading, reflecting on, and living by it. A book of guidance only guides those who open it and act on it.
A Closing Reflection
The revealed books are letters of mercy from a Lord who wants us to find our way back to Him. The Prophets carried them, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived the Quran so completely that his character was described as the Quran walking on earth. The best way to honor the revealed book is to read it, understand it, and let it change us.
May Allah make us among those who hold fast to His Book and love those who brought it.
