The Islamic Approach to Matters Not Confirmed or Rejected by the Quran

What should we believe if something is found in the present scriptures that neither clearly conforms to nor contradicts the teachings of the Holy Quran?

In such a situation, we should neither approve nor disapprove of it. Instead, we should maintain our faith in the Divine Books and say:

“Aamantu Billahi wa Malaaa’ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi.”

Meaning:

“I believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His Messengers.”

Respect for the Divine Books

Islam teaches Muslims to believe that Allah Almighty sent Divine Books to His Prophets for the guidance of mankind. Muslims believe in the original revelations given to the Prophets, while the Glorious Quran is the final Divine Book and the ultimate source of guidance for Muslims.

When discussing previous scriptures, it is therefore important to maintain both faith and caution. Not everything attributed to an earlier scripture can automatically be declared authentic Divine revelation.

When a Matter Is Not Confirmed or Rejected

Sometimes a statement found in earlier scriptures may not have a clear equivalent in the teachings of the Holy Quran. If it neither agrees with nor contradicts the Quran, a Muslim should refrain from declaring it definitely true or definitely false.

This approach protects a believer from making claims about matters for which there is no clear Islamic evidence.

Instead, the believer should affirm the fundamental articles of faith and leave the uncertain matter without making a definite judgment.

Belief in Allah, His Angels, Books and Messengers

The words “Aamantu Billahi wa Malaaa’ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi” express a fundamental Islamic belief.

A Muslim believes in:

  • Allah Almighty, the One true God.
  • His Angels, whom He created and commanded.
  • His Divine Books, originally revealed for the guidance of mankind.
  • His Messengers, whom Allah Almighty sent to guide their peoples.

This belief demonstrates respect for Allah's revelation and His Prophets without making unsupported claims about uncertain matters.

The Importance of Caution in Matters of Faith

Matters relating to revelation and Divine Books are serious matters of belief. A Muslim should therefore avoid speaking without knowledge.

If something is clearly established by the Quran and authentic Islamic teachings, we accept it. If something clearly contradicts the Quran, we reject the contradiction. But if a matter is neither confirmed nor rejected by the Quran, the safer approach is to refrain from making a definite judgment.

Such caution reflects humility before Allah Almighty and acknowledges the limits of human knowledge.

Conclusion

Islam teaches us to believe in Allah Almighty, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. When encountering a statement in earlier scriptures that is neither confirmed nor contradicted by the Holy Quran, we should neither affirm it as certainly true nor reject it without evidence.

Instead, we should maintain our faith and say:

“Aamantu Billahi wa Malaaa’ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi.”

“I believe in Allah, His angels, His Books and His Messengers.”

May Allah Almighty grant us sound knowledge, wisdom, humility, and steadfastness in our faith, and guide us to speak only that which is true and beneficial. Aameen.
