The Elder Brother Has the Rights of a Father

In Islam, family relationships carry great importance, and every member of the family has certain rights and responsibilities. Among these relationships, the bond between brothers is especially valuable. An elder brother is expected to care for, guide, protect, and support his younger brothers and sisters with kindness and sincerity.

It is said:

“The elder brother has as much right over his younger as a father has over his children.”

This beautiful saying highlights the respect and responsibility that should exist between elder and younger siblings. An elder brother often acts as a source of guidance and protection for the younger members of the family. He should advise them wisely, help them in times of difficulty, and encourage them toward good deeds and righteous conduct.

At the same time, younger brothers and sisters should respect their elder brother, listen to his sincere advice, and appreciate the care and sacrifices he makes for them. Respect within the family creates love, unity, and peace.

The responsibility of an elder brother, however, should never become an excuse for harshness, oppression, or unnecessary control. Guidance should be given with wisdom, patience, mercy, and affection. Similarly, younger siblings should not take advantage of the kindness and support of their elder brother.

A strong family is built when its members look after one another, forgive each other's mistakes, and stand together during difficult times. The elder brother can become a role model for the younger ones through his good character, honesty, patience, and religious conduct.

Therefore, brothers should preserve their relationship with love and mutual respect. An elder brother should fulfill his responsibility with compassion, while younger siblings should respond with obedience, gratitude, and respect. Such a relationship strengthens the family and promotes harmony among its members.
