Ramadan- Why we Fast?
Why We Fast:
Fasting is a way to attain Taqwa, a high sense of consciousness with Allaah[ Taa'aalaa]. Doing that which is favored by Allaah Almighty, and avoiding that which is forbidden is one the best ways to fulfill the commands of Islaam.
There are many reasons why fasting is necessary for Muslims to strengthen our faith. Some of the following reasons are listed below:
1. Fasting is a means by which we learn to appreciate and give thanks for that which Allaah Kareem has bestowed upon us. Giving up eating, drinking, and other worldly desires, we learn to appreciate their true value. This appreciation translates into motivation to be more grateful for what we have.
2. Fasting in this month is a excellent tool for believers to give up any lingering bad habits or haram activity. Since we give up such halal things as food or drink, the thought of doing haram things should be unthinkable. Its a great way for us to break those habits and seek clarity.
3. As weak as we are, desires are constantly distracting our minds. In order to control these desires fast ing provides a great way to suppress

this urge. When we are hungry or thirsty we forget about other desires and learn to subdue them better.
A beautiful advice by the Prophet [Peace be upon Him] showing wisdom in how to deal with desires is in the following Hadees:
Prophet (Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wa Sallam) said: O young men! Whoever among you can afford to get married, let him do so, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and protecting one's chastity. Whoever cannot do that, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.
4. Fasting also allows us to reflect and think about how the poor or less fortunate cope not just during this month but throughout the whole year. We are more empathetic and compassionate towards those less fortunate. Many Muslims around the world donate and give extra to the poor because they have a better understanding of how the poor feel.
This month is a time of training for Muslims. To be more God [Allaah]Conscious, take control of our desires, develop a better attitude of thankfulness, and increasing our empathy for those less fortunate than us. Doing this everyday for a whole month helps to ingrain these values in our minds and develop good habits which will carry us throughout the whole year.
These are some of the reasons why fasting is not only prescribed but beneficial. We ask Allaah Almighty to accept our fasts and increase our Taqwa and love for Him.
Aameen.
