The Radiant Beloved City of Madinah Munawarah
Although the Beloved Holy city Madinah Shareef came to prominence with the introduction of Islaam, its roots date back hundreds of years. Madinah Shareef is 210 miles [340 km] north of Makkah.
At the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] Madinah was approximately the size of the present masjid and the surrounding white tiled area.
Situated on a plain with surrounding hills, the city had abundant water
supplies that fed vast date palms and vegetable gardens. The availability of
food and water made Madinah an important re- provisioning point for caravans
that plied the commercial routes from the southern part of the Arabian
Peninsula along the Red Sea to Syria and Egypt.
Its inhabitants sold food to these passing caravans and, over time, became involved in trade.
The Radiant City is called Al Munawarah because it was enlightened by the light of Islam, and the light [Noor] of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] ever since then and it continues to carry us into the light that illuminates the universe. It was the first capital of Islam.
