The Sighting of the Ramadan Moon

RAMADAN MOON (چاند)

Hazrat Ibn Umaar (رضی اللہ عنہ) narrated, I heard the Beloved

Holy Prophet (صلّی اللہ علیہ وسلم) saying,

“When you see the crescent (of the month of Ramadan), start fasting, and when you see the crescent (of the month of Shawwal), stop fasting; and if the sky is overcast (and you can't see It) then regard the crescent (month) of Ramadan (as of 30 days, in other words complete 30 days)”.

THE SIGHTING OF THE MOON

Ramadan

The much-anticipated start of the month is based on a combination of physical sightings of the moon. The practice varies from place to place, some places relying heavily on sighting reports and others totally on astronomical calculations. The witnessing of the new crescent by only one just person, male or two female is sufficient.

The Islamic lunar calendar, being 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, and migrates throughout the seasons. The entire cycle takes around 35 years. In this way, the length of the day, and thus the fasting period, varies in length from place to place over the years. Every Muslim, no matter where he or she lives, will see an average Ramadan day of the approximately 13.5 hours.
