Beloved Grandfather of the Beloved Prophet- Hazrat Abdul Muttalib Ibne Hashim- [Salutation be Upon Them]!

Hazrat Abdul Muttalib Ibne Hashim

(May Allah be pleased with him)

Hazrat Abdul Muttalib ibne Hashim, also known as Shaybah ibne Hashim, was the grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عايه وسالم and the leader of the Banu Hashim clan within the Quraysh tribe in Makkah.

He is known for his role in rediscovering the well of Zamzam and for his care of the young beloved Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عايه وسالم after the passing away of his parents.

You were named Shaibah (meaning "white-haired") because you had a few strands of white hair on your head at birth. The reason you became known as Abdul Muttalib was due to your upbringing in your maternal family in Madinah. Your father, Hashim, had passed away before your birth, so you lived solely with your mother.

One day, while playing archery with the children of Madinah, a man from the descendants of Abd Manaf passed by and began watching the children. As you struck the target with your arrow, he said, “This boy is truly the son of Hashim, the Saiyyid of Bat’ha

(chief of Makkah).”

Curious, he asked you, “Who are you?”
You replied, “I am Shaibah bin Hashim bin Manaf.”

Upon returning to Makkah, the man informed Hazrat Muttalib bin Abd Manaf that he had seen his nephew in Madinah, and praised you highly, stating that such a noble child should not be left there but brought to Makkah.

Muttalib immediately set out for Madinah. Upon reaching, he took you with him. You were around seven or eight years old at the time.

When Muttalib arrived in Makkah with you seated behind him, people asked who the child was. Out of modesty, and perhaps because of your condition, Muttalib replied, “He is my servant” (Abd). From then on, people began calling you Abdul Muttalib, and this name became widely known, overtaking your birth name.

Despite this, Muttalib loved and cared for you more than his own children. When his financial situation improved, he publicly announced that you were his nephew, the son of Hashim.

Your Inheritance and Status

Your uncle Hazrat Muttalib gave you all the property of your father, as Hashim was the chief of Makkah. After his death, his position and responsibilities were passed on to you.

(Kamil ibn al-Athir, Vol 2, p. 5)

As you grew up, one day while resting in the Hateem, you awoke to find yourself beautifully dressed, with a fine turban on your head, oil in your hair, and kohl (surma) in your eyes. Amazed and unaware of who had adorned you, you informed your uncle Muttalib. He took you to the Qurayshi priests and narrated the event. They interpreted it as a divine sign and said,

“The Lord of the heavens has ordained that this young man should be married.”

Hazrat Muttalib then arranged your marriage to married Fatimah bint ‘Amr, who gave birth to Hazrat Abdul laah, the beloved father of the Prophet Muhammad .

[May Allah be pleased with them].

Leadership and Spiritual Eminence

After Hazrat Muttalib passed away, you inherited the leadership of Makkah, including the responsibilities of hosting pilgrims and maintaining the Ka‘bah.

You were known for your refined character, spiritual purity, and noble bearing. Your body emitted a fragrance akin to pure musk, and the Light (Nur) of the Holy Prophet radiated from your forehead.

During severe droughts, the people of Quraysh would take your hand and bring you to Mount Shabeer, praying to Allaah Almighty through your intercession. Allaah Kareem would accept their prayers and bless them with rain—by the barakah of the Prophetic Light you carried.

Due to the blessings of this Luminous Light, you were extremely virtuous, courteous, and pure. People referred to you as the Saiyyid of Quraysh and Ashraf al-Quraysh—the Noblest of Quraysh. Even prominent leaders would be awed simply by your presence and would honor and revere you.
