Three Things That Are Constructive and Three That Are Destructive
Islam teaches us that a person's success depends greatly upon their character, intentions, and actions. Some qualities strengthen a person's faith and improve their life, while other qualities gradually destroy righteousness and good character.
There are three constructive qualities that help a person remain firm upon the path of goodness, and three destructive qualities that can lead a person toward spiritual and moral loss.
Three Constructive Qualities
1. Fear of Allah in Secret and in Open
A believer should fear Allah Almighty whether alone or in the presence of others. True consciousness of Allah does not depend upon people watching us. A person who remembers that Allah knows everything will try to avoid sins even when nobody else can see them.
This fear is not merely fear of punishment; it also reflects respect, awareness, and reverence for Allah Almighty. It encourages a believer to remain sincere and obedient in every situation.
2. Speaking the Truth in Pleasure and Displeasure
Truthfulness is one of the most important qualities of a believer. A person should speak the truth whether they are happy with someone or displeased with them.
It is easy to praise someone when we love them, but true character is shown when we remain truthful even during anger, disagreement, or disappointment. A Muslim should not allow personal feelings to make them abandon justice and honesty.
Truthfulness builds trust, strengthens relationships, and protects a person from many other wrongs.
3. Moderation in Richness and Indigence
A believer should maintain moderation whether living in wealth or experiencing financial difficulty. Wealth should not make a person arrogant, wasteful, or careless, while poverty should not lead a person to despair or abandon dignity.
A balanced person remains grateful when Allah grants abundance and remains patient when facing hardship. Moderation helps a person maintain peace of mind and remember that both wealth and poverty are temporary conditions of this worldly life.
Three Destructive Qualities
1. Following Sensual Desires
One of the dangers to a person's faith and character is blindly following one's desires. When a person allows every desire to control their decisions, they may gradually move away from obedience to Allah.
Islam teaches believers to control their desires and choose what is lawful and beneficial rather than simply following whatever the heart or ego demands.
2. Miserliness
Miserliness is another destructive quality. A person who becomes excessively attached to wealth may refuse to fulfill the rights of others or spend in good causes.
Wealth is a blessing and a responsibility. A believer should use what Allah has provided with gratitude and generosity, while avoiding wastefulness. Helping others and fulfilling rightful obligations protect the heart from excessive love of worldly possessions.
3. Pride in Oneself
The third destructive quality is being proud of oneself, which is described as the worst among these destructive qualities. Self-admiration can make a person forget their dependence upon Allah Almighty and cause them to look down upon others.
A believer should remember that every ability, blessing, achievement, and opportunity ultimately comes from Allah. Humility, gratitude, and recognition of one's own shortcomings protect a person from arrogance.
A Lesson for Every Believer
These six qualities provide an important lesson for daily life. Fear of Allah, truthfulness, and moderation strengthen a person's character, while uncontrolled desires, miserliness, and pride can weaken the heart.
A successful Muslim should therefore strive to develop good qualities and remove harmful ones. We should examine ourselves regularly and ask whether our actions are bringing us closer to Allah or allowing our desires and ego to control us.
May Allah Almighty grant us sincere fear of Him, truthfulness in every situation, moderation in wealth and hardship, and protect us from following our desires, miserliness, and pride. Aameen.
