Hazrat Sultan Salah ud deen Ayyubi was a great Kurdish leader who ruled over Egypt and Syria in the Middle Ages in twelve century.

He was born near Baghdad in 1137  in the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit to the well-known Ayyubi family. He was a Ruler known for his kindness, wisdom, and mercy. 


His real name was Yusuf ibn Ayyub and received the title of Salah ud deen [The Righteousness of the Faith], best popularly known in the West as Saladin,

In his youth, he studied the Holy Quran and theology along with astronomy, mathematics and law and received military training.

He later entered the service of a powerful Turkish governor in northern Syria who made him commander of his fortress in Baalbek city in eastern Lebanon near the Syrian border.



At the height of his power, his Sultanate spanned Egypt, Syria, the Jazira [Upper Mesopotamia], the Hijaz [Western Arabia], Yemen, parts of western North Africa, and Nubia.

Jerusalem was first conquered in 638 by the second Muslim Caliph, Hazrat Umar bin al-Khattab [Radiyal Laah Anhu]. Over the next four centuries, it was ruled by Muslims until the holy city fell during the European crusades in 1099.

During his reign, he managed to unite the Muslim World, and capture Jerusalem from the rule of the Crusaders in 1187.
