Allamah Iqbal on Hazrat Imaam Husaien [Radiyal Laah Anha]: The Voice of Conscience

In the heart of Islamic poetry and philosophy, Allamah Muhammad Iqbal — the spiritual thinker of the East — held Hazrat Imaam Husaien [Radiyal Laah Anha] in the highest reverence. For Iqbal, Husaien was more than a historical figure; he was the symbol of truth, resistance, and divine love.

🌹 Iqbal’s Famous Couplets

In one of his most quoted verses, Iqbal writes:

“Islam zinda hota hai har Karbala ke baad”
“Islam is revived after every Karbala.”

These words pierce through time, reminding us that the sacrifice of Hazrat Imaam Husaien [Radiyal Laah Anha] is not bound to the sands of Karbala — it lives on in every era, wherever injustice rises and truth must be spoken.

🩸 A Torchbearer of Divine Light

Iqbal called Husaien the “Imam of the free” — a man whose sajdah (prostration) in Karbala was more powerful than thousands of armies. For Iqbal, it was Husaien’s refusal to bow to tyranny that made him the soul of Islam, the very pulse of La Ilaha Illal laah.

"Gharq-e-khoon hai kya gham, jab raah-e-haqq ho manzoor,
Karbala ke dasht mein Husaien ne yeh dikhaya noor."

"What is drowning in blood, if truth is the goal?
In the desert of Karbala, Husaien revealed that divine light."

🌙 Iqbal’s Message to the Ummah

Allamah Iqbal didn’t speak of Karbala as history —
He spoke of it as a mirror — reflecting the moral responsibility of every believer.
To speak truth.
To resist falsehood.
To love Allaah Almighty more than life itself.

In Hazrat Imaam Husaien [Radiyal Laah Anha], he saw the perfect fusion of spirit and action.

📿 Final Reflection

When Allamah Iqbal looked to Karbala, he didn’t just see a martyr.
He saw a movement.
He saw the living message of Islam — not in power, but in sacrifice.

And today, we still echo his cry:

“Husaien is the secret of La Ilahaa Illal laah.”
